In the announcement of Robert Lee Swain's passing, Drug Topics stated, “The contributions he made to Pharmacy as a profession and to the independent retail pharmacist will immortalize him in the Hall of Fame of Pharmacy.”+1 Swain began his pharmacy career as a community practitioner, but he took on many other roles in a career that included “state health official, board of pharmacy secretary, association leader, educator, journalist, and as an authority of drug laws and pharmacopoeial projects.”+2 His early experience as a community pharmacist and owner, association leader, and member of the state board of pharmacy formed the basis for his illustrious career. The varied and broad experiences stretching over 6 decades gained Swain the unofficial but heartfelt title of elder statesman.+3 In 1948, Rufus Lyman, editor of the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, wrote that he wished that Swain would outlive him because of the almost impossible task to write an obituary that would do Swain full justice.+4
